Cooper shouts instructions

Forest Green Rovers boss Mark Cooper was left feeling relieved that the season has come to a close after a frustrating defeat to Grimsby Town at The New Lawn.

JJ Hooper opened the scoring with a scrappy goal after 51 minutes before adding two late, impressive strikes to his tally and claiming a 40 minute hat-trick.

Rovers had already secured survival two games ago but the New Lawn boss was still left frustrated by his side’s mentality.

“I’m glad it’s over, we’ve taken losing too easily this year and when we come back for pre-season training we can’t accept defeat like we do now as a group” he said.

“We have to hit the reset button and the players that are still here come July have to work and become winners.

“There’s been plenty of poor performances this season and that’s got to change and we’ve got to get out of that losing mentality. It’s a lot harder to win a game than it is to lose one.”

Although the season has only just ended, Cooper is already starting his plans for the next campaign in the Football League.

“It was important that we stayed up which we’ve done with games to go, but like I said we need to change that mentality and we’ve got to make sure we don’t except defeat whether that’s in a 5-a-side or whatever it is in training,” he explained.

“We’re not below that dotted line and that’s the main thing in our first year but we have to think to next year.

“We’re not just accepting survival as success but from a while out we knew that was the aim and we did it with games to go but I’m glad it’s over and we can start preparing for next season.”

Cooper also hinted at those joining the ranks over the summer, keeping his mind on the start of next season.

“We’ve already agreed with one player and there’ll be two or three hopefully this week that’ll get us up and running.”
