Young FGR side falls to friendly defeat

Bugiel with the adoring Worthing fans

An FGR side made up largely of Academy players fell to a defeat against Worthing this evening at the Bibby Financial Services Stadium.

The match followed just 24 hours after a first choice eleven beat Swindon Supermarine 3-1 on Monday, so the management decided to use it as an opportunity to blood in some young players.

The friendly was arranged following the transfer of Omar Bugiel between the two sides and he was the star of the show, as the Lebanon international was given the captain’s armband for the fixture and received a warm reception from the home fans.

He will have been the only familiar face to many FGR fans, however there were appearances for new goalkeeper Harry Pickering and Academy graduates Jordan Morris and Tom Anderson.

After a slow opening quarter of an hour, Worthing started to pile pressure on the FGR goal, with Pickering forced into a number of good saves.

James Fraser scored the opener for Worthing, as a Rents corner was only headed as far as the midfielder, whose side-footed volley found the top corner.

FGR equalised just before half time through a fantastic goal from Nathan Trueman. He struck the ball from a diagonal angle thirty yards out and the ball sailed over Worthing ‘keeper Covolan into the top corner.

The second half was only four minutes old when Worthing took the lead again, as Trueman this time put through his own net following a cross from Wills.

Omar Bugiel was replaced just after the hour mark and received a huge ovation from the Worthing faithful.

Worthing then scored two in quick succession, with Douglas and Pope adding further goals in the 68th and 74th minutes to make it 4-1.

At the full time whistle Omar Bugiel was presented with the Worthing player of the season award for the last campaign, after he scored 15 goals for the club before his move to Rovers in February.

He stayed long after the final whistle to chat to fans and sign autographs, in what was a fitting send off for the Rovers number 11.
