Solid victory from Shortwood test

Shortwood United Away

A strong Forest Green side made it two pre-season wins from two on Friday night against Southern League South & West side Shortwood Town at Meadowbank.

A first half header from Christian Doidge alongside goals from Olly Mehew, Jordan Morris and Jordan Stevens in the second period completed a comfortable victory for FGR on a beautiful evening in Nailsworth.

Rovers started the game confidently with plenty of possession, keeping the ball well on a fantastic playing surface.

It took just 5 minutes for the first goal of the game as Scott Laird’s left footed corner was met by Christian Doidge who rose highest in the box to head home giving Rovers an early lead.

Luke James, making his first appearance in a Rovers shirt, looked lively with a few probing runs into Shortwood’s final third and came  close to making it 2-0 in the 21st minute. Picking up the ball 25 yards out he span a defender and fired a shot at goal which was excellently tipped over the bar.

The Wood continued to frustrate FGR for the remainder of the half as the away sides’ only chances came from distance. Manny Monthe had his long-range strike saved and a number of direct free kicks were wasted in quick succession, with none of them making the opposition ‘keeper work.

It was all change for Mark Coopers' men at the break as 10 new players took to the field to get valuable minutes under their belt.

The second half 11 started brightly as Monthe was again denied from long range in the opening minutes of the half. Shamir Mullings and Jordan Stevens’ both had efforts well blocked by home goalkeeper George Burton who was forced into making several saves early on.

Rovers continued to probe the Shortwood defence and it eventually paid off in the 57th minute. An on-rushing Callum Evans picked up the ball out wide on the right and fed Olly Mehew inside the box who made no mistake with his finish to double the lead for Rovers.

Shortwood’s first shot on goal came in the 61st minute as Sam Hunt was fouled just outside of the 18 yard box, but he could only fire the resulting free kick over the bar.

A few minutes later Rovers made it three as Jordan Morris slammed home. Mehew harassed a home defender out by the corner flag turning over possession in FGR’s favour. His drive into the box set up Morris for his first senior goal since signing his pro deal.

A rare Shortwood attack gave new Chelsea loanee Bradley Collins a job to do as Brandon Preece pierced the heart of the Rovers defence, but his final touch let him down as Collins was able to gratefully smother the ball.

The 368 in attendance were treated to the best goal of the game with just 10 minutes left on the clock. Omar Bugiel’s clever play gave him space to tee up academy product Jordan Stevens, whose low drive found the bottom corner 20 yards from goal to make it 4-0.

Shamir Mullings, who held the ball up well in his 45 minutes on the pitch, nearly capped off the evening in style as he danced around multiple Shortwood defenders in the box but his low effort was well saved by the home stopper with only minutes left.
