Rovers slip to first pre-season defeat in Portuguese heat

Omar Bugiel finds the back of the net in Portugal

Forest Green couldn’t make it 6 pre-season wins on the spin as they fell to a 2-1 defeat to Portuguese outfit SC Farense.

A consolation goal in the dying minutes from Omar Bugiel wasn’t enough to mount a late comeback as two strikes from the hosts either side of the break consigned Rovers to their first defeat of 17/18.

It was a frantic start at the Municipal Stadium of Albufeira as a mistake from Rovers gifted the home side the opener just minutes into the first half. A misplaced back pass from Manny Monthe was capitalised on by a Farense forward who made no mistake in slotting the gift easily past Russell.

From this point onwards the hosts had the better of the opening period creating a few opportunities. A last ditch Jack Fitzwater tackle kept the score at just 1-0 in the 15th minute whilst Farense missed from just inside the area minutes later.

The travelling supporters had to wait until the 21st minute for Rovers to record their first shot on goal with Christian Doidge getting on the end of some slick passing, but his shot was wide of the mark.

Farense took control of the last 20 minutes of the first half, troubling the FGR defence on numerous occasions. Defensive duo Manny Monthe and Lee Collins stood strong in the backline to clear some good deliveries into the box by Farense attackers.

The hosts should have made it 2-0 with just 5 minutes left of the first period. A ball was squared into the path of an on-rushing attacker inside the box, but his shot was straight at Russell just 10 yards from goal.

Neither side grasped the nettle after the break with chances for either team few and far between for the first 20 minutes.

Lee Collins was called into action to block a close range shot on goal and Jordan Simpon’s strike from range fly harmlessly over the ball.

The game notched up a gear with just 10 minutes left on the clock though as Farense found the back of the net for the second time.

Midfielder Diogo Melo found space for a long range effort which nestled into the back of the net past the helpless Harry Pickering to make it 2-0 to the Portuguese side.

Rovers, seeking an instant reply, turned up the heat under the European sun and were eventually rewarded for their efforts.

Some fantastic work by Liam Noble and Keanu Marsh-Brown found Omar Bugiel inside the opposition area with his back to goal. The Lebanon international turned swiftly and dispatched his shot into the back of the net to give FGR a richly deserved consolation goal in the final minute of the match.
