Forest Green defeat League One Bristol Rovers

Shamir Mullings celebrates his goal

A dominant performance from Forest Green Rovers marked their fifth win from five in pre-season as Liam Noble and Shamir Mullings scored excellent goals.

The opening few minutes of the game were quite a cagey encounter but as the players settled down both sides started to create chances.

Billy Bodin’s break down the Bristol Rovers right was only stopped by a sliding Scott Laird before, at the other end, Christian Doidge turned his man and ran through. This time, he was denied by a sliding Adam Smith in the Bristol Rovers goal.

Both sides then had a few shots from distance as Liam Noble’s effort was comfortably saved and Ollie Clarke’s sailed over harmlessly at the other end.

But it was Forest Green who took the lead through Liam Noble, continuing his fine set-piece record from last season. His sweetly struck free kick left the keeper rooted to the spot as the ball flew across him into the top right hand corner of the net.

15 minutes later, the home side could have scored two more as, first Luke James couldn’t find the right pass in a three on one before The Pirates short goal kick found Christian Doidge but last season’s leading marksman couldn’t capitalise.

Bradley Collins was then called into action for the first time just after the half hour mark as he denied Byron Moore from close range in spectacular fashion.

Liam Noble then produced an excellent sliding tackle in the box to stop Ollie Clarke’s driving run before the latter fired a shot harmlessly over the bar on the stroke of half time.

Luke James provided the first action of the second half as he turned and fired narrowly wide of Adam Smith’s right hand post.

Bradley Collins then pulled out another good save, this time denying Chris Lines’ powerful free kick.

Five minutes after the hour mark, Shamir Mullings climbed highest in the Bristol Rovers box as he met Charlie Cooper’s excellent cross, powering a header into the top left hand corner of the goal past a flying Smith. 2-0.

Forest Green continued to press and Charlie Cooper almost bagged his first goal in green as Omar Bugiel slipped him through on goal, but, Cooper’s effort was blocked.
