Lillywhite's brushed aside in 3-0 victory

Brimscombe & Thrupp Away

Just 24 hours after their last pre-season fixture Rovers were on the road again to face familiar pre-season opponents Brimscombe & Thrupp at The Meadow.

A first half brace from Christian Doidge as well as a tidy finish from Olly Mehew in the second period sent Rovers home with their third pre-season victory of the season.

Neither team took full control of the game from the off with both sides having opportunities to score during the opening exchanges. Laird’s low cross across the box went unanswered within the first 5 minutes whilst Sam Blackie failed to find the target at the other end.

It was the Rovers though that broke the deadlock with 10 minutes on the clock. Christian Doidge pounced on a loose ball 30 yards from goal, drove towards the box and let loose a 25 yard thunderbolt into the bottom corner of the net to give FGR the lead.

From this point onwards Rovers stamped their authority on the half. Laird again found the time out on the left and picked out a Doidge, but his shot was comfortably gathered into the arms of Lewis Clayton.

Reece Brown nearly doubled the lead emulating Doidge’s earlier finish after 26 minutes. Gaining possession of the ball outside the 18 yard box he unleashed his own low drive but it could only find the foot of the oppositions post.

Luke James got amongst the action with a number of runs into the home box. His ability to make space for himself inside enemy territory finally paid off as he was tripped inside the area leaving the referee no option but to award a penalty.

Doidge stepped up to the spot and coolly put the kick low to keeper’s right hand side, with the ball nestling in the bottom corner.

The Lillywhite’ were presented with an opportunity to reduce the deficit right on half time. The Rovers defence failed to completely clear the ball from danger and Sam Blackie pounced, but he could only send his volley high and wide.

A raft of changes were made during the break with only Jordan Stevens starting the second half from the opening line-up.

The game opened up from here on in with both sides creating chances as Brimscombe & Thrupp grew back into the game.

Omar Bugiel had the first effort on goal of the second period but could only fire his shot wide of the post.

It was the home team’s turn to attack as Karl Nash, a thorn in the side of the defence for most of the match, outmuscled his marker inside the Rovers box and found Ben Snook with a simple layoff but his tame effort was gratefully collected by Russell.

Rovers sensed an opportunity was coming and turned up the gas creating a number of goal scoring opportunities in succession. Mehew and trialist Josh Smile came close but it was Shamir Mullings who almost made it 3-0. The home goalkeeper hashed an on-rushing clearance outside of his box and Mullings, with the ‘keeper stranded, attempted an audacious lob but his effort could only find the woodwork.

Having been in the ascendancy for some time, Rovers eventually extended their lead to three in the 70th minute. Some great hold up play by Mullings released Wishart down the left wing, crossing into the box to find Mehew inside the area who dispatched the delivery into the roof of the net from close range.

Chances until the final whistle were few and far between. Ben Snook sent a curling effort just wide of the target whilst Wishart also tried his luck from range for FGR but his strike couldn’t find the back of the net in the final few minutes.
