Wishart and Mehew earn first Cleeve win

Bishop's Cleeve Away

A young Forest Green side, sprinkled with a mix of first team squad members, got the club’s pre-season campaign off to a winning start at Bishop’s Cleeve’s Kayte Lane on Tuesday night, writes Richard Joyce.

Two first half goals were enough to clinch victory over the Southern League South & West Division outfit on a rainy night near Cheltenham.

Many of those that impressed on the night came from Scott Bartlett’s FGR Academy squad, who are gearing up for their first campaign in the Football League Youth Alliance, while Dan Wishart and Olly Mehew grabbed the goals to seal victory.

Wishart looked lively from the start down the left hand side, and his burst clear on seven minutes ended up with the former Sutton United man rifling a shot over the bar.

He would find the target shortly after though as he pushed FGR in front. Coming inside from the left, he found a way past Paul Tassell in the Cleeve goal with a neat finish on his right foot.

Chances were limited for the hosts, but ex-Slimbridge attacker Jack Sklenar almost nodded in on the quarter of the hour mark after Wales hockey international Liam Brignull headed himself across goal.

Rovers doubled the scoreline when a fine team move was finished off by Mehew. The forward poked home after an exchange of passes between Omar Bugiel and Shamir Mullings set up the young Bristolian.

Trialist Josh Smile’s shot was deflected wide as Forest Green looked to extend their advantage, with Tassell producing an excellent save to deny Liam Noble’s free kick midway through the half.

Cleeve came closing to drawing a goal back just before half time. Jacob Sloggett’s free kick effort was strongly struck and only just sneaked past the post.

Tassell was called upon again to make a key save for the hosts just before half time. Mehew’s persistence allowed him to square the ball in the six-yard box for Mullings, but the towering forwards attempt was kept out with a brilliant reaction stop.

There were mass changes at the break with a number of the club’s Academy youngsters introduced to proceedings. Nevertheless, early on in the half Jordan Morris saw two good opportunities saved after he had broken clear on the left.

Morris then turned provider for Academy second year Jordan Stevens, who wore the captain’s armband in the second 45 minutes, and his effort inside the box was deflected out for a corner.

Academy assistant boss Chris Barker stood out on the night with his years of experience shining through – his driving run on the hour mark ended with a powerful left footed shot that whistled just past the post.

The game would peter out towards the end, although Mehew did produce one good final effort, as the Academy youngsters saw out the game with impressive control to wrap up a winning start to the pre-season calendar.
