Match Report: Rovers seal Football League status

Forest Green Rovers tonight confirmed that they will be an EFL team next season after holding out against a well drilled Yeovil Town.

FGR looked by far the brighter of the two sides in the first half and went close on several occasions during the first 20 minutes but Yeovil grew back into the game and were the dominant side in the second period. Both sides however, will be more than happy with a 0-0 score line as the result sealed each of them a spot in next years’ English Football League Two.

Mark Cooper made two changes to the side that beat Chesterfield on Saturday as he brought in Charlie Cooper and Dayle Grubb for Lee Collins and Alex Bray.

Forest Green started anxiously at the back with Bradley Collins almost gifting Yeovil possession on the edge of the area but he did well to get the ball back under control before clearing up field.

However, it was FGR that went the closer of the two sides inthe opening five minutes as Scott Laird did well to make some space for himself on the left before curling an excellent ball towards Christian Doidge but the striker was unlucky to see the ball skip away from him across the face of goal.

With 13 minutes on the clock FGR went even closer as Laird offered the short option from a corner and, once again, whipped an excellent ball into the area but Haydn Hollis couldn’t connect with the goal gaping.

Both sides were well aware that a point apiece would be enough to secure their Football League statuses but FGR continued to search for the opening goal.

Clements, with 18 minutes on the clock, delivered a sumptuous cross from the right and although Doidge couldn’t direct his header on target, the ball found Hollis at the back post but his cross-goal volley was palmed away in some style by the Glovers keeper.

From the resulting corner, the visitors went inches from scoring again as Doidge ran in at the far post but could only nod Laird’s cross onto the post.

As the half continued however, the Glovers began to claw their way back into the encounter and Gavin Gunning was called into action after 20 minutes to charge down Thomas James’ effort from outside the area however the home side failed to create another clear chance for the rest of the half.

As the referee got the second half underway, the hosts were far quicker out of the blocks and just three minutes into the half they had a golden opportunity to break the deadlock.

The ball was drilled in from the left and Francois Zoko raced in but couldn’t get a clean connection on the ball but instead clattered into Collins who did exceptionally well to dive at the striker’s feet and prevent the shot. Collins however, remained down and needed to be stretchered off to applause from around the ground.

Neither side were able to create another clear chance until the 77th minute when Zoko, this time the provider, delivered a good low ball into the area and Alex Fisher’s low shot at the front post was blocked and flew behind for a corner.

From the resulting corner, the hosts had another chance to beat Cam Belford but Omar Sowunmi headed over at the back post.
