Swindon claim late win at The New Lawn

A 2-0 score line didn’t reflect an evenly contested game as late goals from Olly Lancashire and Matt Taylor sealed the victory for Swindon.

Forest Green started brightly and Liam Noble picked up on a Christian Doidge knock down in the box early on but his header lacked power and didn't trouble Lawrence Vigouroux in the Swindon goal.

Luke Norris found himself with acres of space at the back post after 11 minutes as a Swindon corner was swung towards him. His touch was good, but Mark Roberts was able to charge down the shot in spectacular fashion.

Toni Gomes started to create chances for FGR and his quick feet soon created two shooting opportunities within minutes of each other. Both, however, were deflected and couldn’t really work Vigouroux.

Drissa Traore, in the heart of the Rover’s midfield, was dominating the middle of the park after half an hour, but it was Swindon who found themselves with another chance to take the lead. Paul Mullin found himself in space at the back post but his volley was once again blocked by Roberts after 39 minutes.

Timi Elsnik was next to try his luck for Swindon but his powerful effort after 41 minutes flew high and wide.

Four minutes into the second period, Rovers looked the livelier of the two sides and Toni Gomes almost found the net from a corner.

But it was Swindon who had a great chance only one minute later. Luke Norris was played through by Timi Elsnik but the Rover’s stopper Brad Collins spread his body to meet the shot with an excellent save.

Will Randall began causing even more trouble down the left hand side but no one could connect with his crosses. And it was Randall who won a free kick on the edge of box, but Liam Noble couldn’t hit the target.

Christian Doidge picked the ball up on the edge of the box after some patient build up play, but his left footed effort lacked venom.

As the game entered its final five minutes, Olly Lancashire arrived at the back post and nodded in a corner to give Swindon a late goal and all three points.

And Swindon would make the game safe as the board went up for added time. Substitute Matt Taylor’s long range effort squirmed through Brad Collins.

Charlie Cooper tried to give FGR some hope of a late come back but his effort from 25 yards flashed wide.
