Rovers progress to last 16

Doidge celebrates his goal

Christian Doidge's late strike earns FGR a place in the last 16 of the Checkatrade Trophy.

Doidge broke the deadlock after 80 minutes in a nervy game at Swindon Town's County Ground as FGR progress to the next round.

Mark Cooper made just two changes to the side that faced Exeter on Saturday, Manny Monthe coming into the heart of defence in place of Mark Roberts while Jack Fitzwater made his return from a concussion to replace Omar Bugiel.

Swindon went closest of the two sides in the opening 10 minutes, Matty Taylor’s driven effort from outside the box struck Keshi Anderson but didn’t find its way towards goal.

Alex Iacovitti then went close at the other end on 12 minutes but his flicked header from Scott Laird’s corner, also went wide.

Anderson then almost found the net for a second time after 26 minutes. His effort, this time on target, produced a stunning save by the feet of Brad Collins to keep the scores level.

Luke Norris was the next to try his luck for the hosts, allowing a long through ball to bounce before turning and attempting a spectacular overhead kick which the referee adjudged to have been deflected over the crossbar.

Swindon started the second half the way they finished the first, Paul Mullin curling an effort from the edge of the box through a crowd of bodies and narrowly past Brad Collins’ far post.

With the addition of former FGR man Kaiyne Woolery, Swindon looked to push the visitors back. But it was Reece Brown who had the next chance. His left-footed strike from range forcing a spectacular save from Lawrence Vigouroux.

Anderson had yet another chance to shoot just after the hour mark. This time his powerful effort flashed wide of the near post.

In a bid to change the game, Mark Cooper brought on Jordan Stevens and Toni Gomes, the former launching himself straight into action, his long range effort flying narrowly over the bar.

The visitors would, with just 10 minutes to play, take the lead. Dan Wishart found Brown in the middle of the park and the young midfielder’s threaded through-ball was perfectly weighted for Doidge who, despite being initially denied by the legs of Vigouroux, tucked home.

As the game progressed into added time, both sides had a man sent off. Keshi Anderson and Dale Bennet were given their marching orders for two separate bookable offences.
