MATCH REPORT: Rovers beat 10-man Stevenage

Reuben Reid celebrates scoring

Forest Green Rovers made it four wins on the spin at The New Lawn as they came from behind to dispatch Stevenage 3-1.

Luke Wilkinson, on his return to the Stevenage side, scored directly from a free-kick for the visitors to see themselves reduced to 10 men when Alex Revell saw red.

Rovers took advantage of the man advantage in first-half added time when Reuben Reid netted his second goal in an FGR shirt before Farrend Rawson grabbed his first goal in green and black on the hour mark.

The three points were sealed nine minutes before the end when Christian Doidge was on hand to turn home the third from close range.

A sickness bug hit the team prior to kick-off with both captain Lee Collins and Alex Bray ruled out on the day of the game, Chris Clements being brought in to make his full league debut alongside Dan Wishart.

The visitors started brightly and Farrend Rawson had to be alert in just the sixth minute when a deep free-kick was flicked over the head of Brad Collins in the box but the Forest Green defender was back to clear the ball to safety with only the goal behind him.

Rovers began to settle into the game, Reid firing a warning shot from the edge of the box.

Stevenage were handed a soft free-kick on the edge of the box after 24 minutes when John Goddard went down under the pressure of Clements.

After a few moments, Wilkinson stepped up to take the set-piece and curled it around the wall, the ball nestling in the bottom corner to hand them the lead.

However, just four minutes later, Stevenage found themselves reduced to 10 men after Revell lost control going in for a challenge with Isaiah Osbourne and referee Graham Salisbury had no hesitation in brandishing a straight red.

Forest Green were able to take advantage of the extra man on the pitch in first-half time added on when Reid was slid into behind the back of the Stevenage back line and the striker kept his composure to slide the ball under the body of Tom King and into the empty net.

Stevenage had the ball in the back of the net just two minutes after the break when Farrend Rawson inadvertently turned Mark McKee’s free-kick into his own net but the offside flag spared his blushes.

The home side were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 58th minute when Reid played a lovely reverse ball into Christian Doidge in the box who saw his effort well saved by King. The rebound fell to Grubb whose shot couldn't be turned home by Wishart on the line with Ronnie Henry back on the line making the block.

The lucrative second goal did come for Rovers on the hour mark when Wishart pushed the ball past his man down the left wing before delivering to the back post to find Rawson.

The defenders header planted into the ground, and it bounced up, off the bar before eventually being prodded home.

The result was all but wrapped up in the 81st minute when a free-kick in the middle of the pitch was taken quickly before Isaiah Osbourne cut the ball across the face of goal and Doidge was on hand with the slightest of touches to turn it home from close range.
