Match Report: Notts County win it late

Tahvon Campbell in action

A goal in each half for the visitors proved to be the difference as FGR fell to their first defeat in six games.

Former FGR man Liam Noble opened the scoring after 35 minutes and although Tahvon Campbell equalised for the hosts with less than 20 minutes to play it would eventually be The Magpies day as Matt Tootle fired home late on.

Mark Cooper made two changes to the side that drew 3-3 with Newport County in the week as Dan Wishart and Lee Collins returned to the side in place of Alex Bray and the injured Christian Doidge.

Both sides struggled to get a foothold in the game in a cagey first 15 minutes, with neither keeper really tested.

The first real chance of note for the hosts came in the 23rd minute when Reuben Reid was able to get a shot off from the edge of the box that took a deflection. Adam Collin could only parry but Notts reacted first to clear the rebound.

Rovers continued to struggle in possession and the breakthrough came for the visitors 34 minutes in when Dan Wishart conceded possession on the edge of the box.

The ball was then threaded through to Lewis Alessandra, who beat the offside trap, and although he was brought down by Brad Collins in the box, Noble was on hand to pick up the pieces and slot the ball home.

Jon Stead had a chance to double the visitors’ lead a minute before the break but his curling effort from the corner of the box flew narrowly wide of the far top corner.

Rovers were sluggish coming out for the second half but again the first chance of the period fell to them as Chris Clements tried to curl an effort towards the far post from 25-yard out but Collin was able to tip it around the post well.

From the resulting corner, Dayle Grubb delivered a good ball in but Gavin Gunning couldn’t keep his header down.

Rovers managed to get themselves back on level terms with just under 20 minutes of the game to go when substitute Campbell stepped up to the plate. After being played in by a nice ball from Reid down the left he drove into the box and the chance looked to have gone with the angle tightening but he drove home hard into the roof of the net.

Campbell then went within the width of the post of doubling his tally just minutes later as he was played in on the break and let rip from 25-yeards out but his shot cannoned off the crossbar.

However, it was the visitors who restored their lead with nine minutes left on the clock when Tootle charged forward unmarked, received the ball on the edge of the box before firing through a field of players to beat Brad Collins.
