Forest Green humbled at The New Lawn

Marsh-Brown in action against Newport

Two goals in each half for the visitors Newport County saw Forest Green fall to a 0-4 defeat at The New Lawn.

An injury to Brad Collins in the week meant FGR didn’t have a goalkeeper on the bench. After recovering from illness, Reece Brown returned to the starting 11 in place of last week’s goalscorer Omar Bugiel who dropped to the bench.

Padraig Amond opened the scoring early on and completed his brace just before half time. Scott Bennett then added a third before Shawn McCoulsky added a fourth five minutes from time.

The game’s first real action came on the 15 minute mark as Newport swung a deep corner towards the back post. As Scott Bennett nodded back across goal, Padraig Amond rose highest to head the ball past Sam Russell.

After 23 minutes, Russell was again called upon, this time to deny Mickey Demetriou twice in quick succession. First, punching away across, and then producing a good save to push away the striker’s powerful header.

The first half remained quiet until the 41st minute. Frank Nouble got the better of Mark Roberts and his ball to the back post set up Amond who, once more, was able to profit from another easy chance.

Christian Doidge had FGR’s first chance 43 minutes as he met Luke James’ cross but couldn’t direct his header on target.

Dan Wishart then tested the keeper as his goal-bound cross forced a good save from Joe Day.

Forest Green started the second half well and Charlie Cooper let fly after just two minutes of the second period. His shot from range though, didn’t trouble Joe Day.

Shortly after the hour mark, Keanu Marsh-Brown tried to test the keeper. Excellently turning his man, he drove forward and let fly, only to see his shot flash wide.

With 12 minutes to play, Newport added a third as Bennett swept home a loose ball after a scramble in the Rovers’ box.

Five minutes from time, Newport added a fourth. Substitute Shawn McCoulsky found himself with a free header at the back post after after Dan Butler counter attacked down the left and found McCoulsky with a cross.
