Match Report: Morecambe snatch a point at the death

Clements celebrates with his team mates

Gregg Wylde’s 90th minute strike cancelled out Chris Clements’ first half screamer as the two sides remained next to each other in the League Two table.

Mark Cooper named an unchanged side following Tuesday’s 3-1 victory over Stevenage and although Alex Bray returned to the bench following an illness, club captain Lee Collins was still absent.

Stand-in captain Gavin Gunning had the first chance of the game as he directed a good Dayle Grubb free-kick from the right goalwards, but he was unlucky to see his effort, with the goalkeeper rooted to the spot, drop wide of the far post.

With just 13 minutes of the game gone, Rovers took the lead through loanee Clements. Following a free-flowing Forest Green move, Haydn Hollis found Clements 25 yards from goal and the central midfielder unleashed a powerful strike into the top left-hand corner past a helpless Danijel Nizic.

The hosts looked to find a way back into the encounter and they went close after 26 minutes as Sam Lavelle rose highest in the FGR box to nod a deep corner just over the bar.

Forest Green had two chances to double their lead before the break, both coming from dangerous Grubb set-pieces.

First, after 28 minutes, Farrend Rawson got down low to head a ball from the right goalwards but his effort was cleared off the line and then, just seven minutes later, Rawson again got his head to the ball from across but this time it fell to Christian Doidge inside the penalty area but the in-form striker couldn’t direct his hooked effort goalwards.

The final chance of the first half came with five minutes to go until the break and this time the opportunity fell to the hosts. Steve Old met a corner at the back post and his downward header forced a very smart save from Brad Collins in the Rovers goal.

Doidge almost found another goal for the visitors three minutes into the second half but his headed effort from another good set-piece flew across goal and wide of the post.

The hosts had a golden opportunity to level up the scores just before the hour mark as a shot cannoned back into the area off Collins but as Kevin Ellison raced in to hammer home the rebound, Hollis slid in to make an incredible goal-saving challenge, the follow up shot deflected inches wide.

The hosts thought they had a penalty minutes later as Aaron McGowan threw himself to the ground just inside the box but referee Ross Joyce gave the decision the other way and booked the right-back for simulation.

The hosts began piling on the pressure inside the final 20 minutes and had a few chances to equalise, the most notable of which coming after 80 minutes as Ellison found space at the back post but his powerful volley was charged down by Rawson.

As the fourth official’s board went up with seven additional minutes, the hosts snatched a late equaliser. On his home debut, Wylde was played through and his low effort from outside the area skimmed past Collins and bounced in off the post.
