A 109th minute strike from Gboly Ariyibi sent MK Dons into the second round of the Carabao Cup despite a good display from Forest Green at The New Lawn.

The first chance of the game came when Ariyibi plucked a long pass out of the air and drove diagonally towards Sam Russell’s goal but his deflected shot rolled agonisingly past the post after just five minutes.

Paul Downing then hit a tame effort straight at Sam Russell from eight yards out after some confusion in the Forest Green box.

Rovers began to create chances for themselves and grew into the game. Christian Doidge broke free down the right but was felled by George Williams. From the resulting free kick, Rovers had the ball in the back of the net but the whistle had already gone for offside.

Moments later, Luke James was pulled back in an almost identical position as Doidge as Rovers applied pressure in the closing minutes of the first half.

The second period was a noticeable change in pace as both sides looked to break the deadlock.

Luke James did well down the right hand side to beat Cisse with his cut-back inch perfect but Christian Doidge couldn’t quite direct his powerful shot on target.

Rovers continued to press as Keanu Marsh-Brown’s sumptuous cross was met by substitute Shamir Mullings, but the big strikers header could only find the hands of Nicholls in the Dons goal.

It was Shamir Mullings who again found the target as he met Charlie Cooper’s excellent corner with a volley but he was unlucky to see it cleared off the line.

It was the away teams turn to find an opener as Kieran Agard was played over the top, but his shot from a tight angle could only find the fans behind the goal.

With neither team finding the back of the net the tie went to extra time. Callum Brittain fizzed a dangerous ball across the Rovers’ box seven minutes in but it evaded everyone inside the area.

With the introduction of a fourth sub in extra-time, Scott Laird entered the fray, and his first touch could have been one to remember. He met Charlie Cooper’s corner with a powerful free header but he could only find the top of the crossbar.

The deadlock was finally broken after 109 minutes of football as Gboli Ariyibi cut in onto his right foot and fired into the top right hand corner.

Rovers spurned a number of chances to draw the tie level in the closing moments.

Shamir Mullings was bundled to the floor on the edge of the box but Liam Noble’s free kick couldn’t beat the keeper.

In typical fashion, Keanu Marsh-Brown took it upon himself to create an opportunity, and he almost found the net with a great strike from the edge of the box but Nicholls produced an excellent save to deny him.

Nicholls then produced another good save to deny Lee Collins' close range header from the resulting corner.

With just one minute left in added time Mullings again found space inside the box after an excellent cutback from Laird but he could only drag his shot wide with the final kick of the game.
