Match Report: Rovers beat promotion-chasing Mansfield

Dayle Grubb celebrates his goal

Forest Green produced a huge performance at The New Lawn to see off promotion-hopefuls Mansfield town.

Second-half goals from Reuben Reid and Dayle Grubb proved the difference as FGR comfortably beat the seventh placed Stags in an outstanding display in Nailsworth.

Mark Cooper made five changes to the side that lost 3-1 at Crewe Alexandra in the week as Brad Collins reclaimed his place in goal while Dan Wishart, Tahvon Campbell, Haydn Hollis and Alex Bray all started as well.

Just two minutes into the game, the visitors were dealt a huge blow as top-scorer Danny Rose was injured and forced out of the game.

Campbell looked to be a good outlet for FGR early on,winning a free-kick next to the by-line by the penalty area after some good work down the left but Grubb’s delivery wasn’t met with any conviction by a Rovers player in the box.

FGR went extremely close to opening the scoring after 19 minutes as Grubb picked the ball up on the left before, in typical fashion, he cut inside and curled an effort with his right foot onto the face of the crossbar.

Both sides looked like they could score but it was the visitors who went close next as the ball dropped for Will Atkinson on the edge of the box but his effort was well charged down by Dale Bennett.

As the second-half got underway, it was FGR who looked on top. With 52 minutes on the clock, Reid looked to be in the clear as he latched onto a ball over the top but Conrad Logan reacted quickly to get off his line and block the strikers shot.

With 55 minutes on the clock, Reid got another chance. This time, after Grubb’s ball into the box was knocked back to the edge of the area, Reid’s shot stayed low and powered through Logan.

Grubb almost added a second for FGR with just under an hour as his corner almost caught Logan out at the near post but the keeper was alert and managed to palm the shot away.

However, with 78 minutes on the clock, Grubb finally found the net. Picking up the ball on the right, he floated in between the defender and slotted the ball past Logan from an outrageous angle.

Six minutes from time, FGR’s victory was confirmed as the Stag’s captain Krystian Pearce was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence, pulling Reuben Reid back as he drove at the defence.
