Match Report: FGR miss out to table-toppers Luton

Jordan Stevens

A goal in each half was enough to see off FGR as they fell to a disappointing defeat at The New Lawn.

An Alan Sheehan goal in the first half and a Danny Hylton strike in the second was enough to keep Luton top of the table despite a resolute Rovers performance.

Mark Cooper made two changes to the side that lost to Exeter in the FA Cup last Tuesday with Jack Fitzwater returning to the side place of Manny Monthe. Toni Gomes also gave way as Jordan Simpson stepped in to make his first start, lowering the average age of the midfield to just 19.

Despite Luton’s lofty league position, it was Forest Green who started the brighter of the two sides and Christian Doidge almost found a gap in the Hatter’s defence after just four minutes but a good challenge prevented him getting a shot away.

Jordan Stevens was then set free down the right-hand side but he couldn’t beat the keeper at the near post as he drove inside the area.

Doidge then had another chance after 16 minutes as he brought the ball under control with his head before firing at goal from the left of the penalty area. He too was unable to beat Marek Stech in the Luton goal.

As the opening half hour grew to a close, Luton began to grow into the game but couldn’t create a real opportunity until the 40th minute when Brad Collins was forced to pull off a stunning save, getting down well to prevent a shot from near the penalty spot finding the bottom corner.

Then, just five minutes later as the first half drew to a close the visitors did manage to break through the resolute FGR back-line after a well-worked corner routine allowed Sheehan to fire in off the post.

Forest Green had the best chance of the opening 10 minutes of the second half as Dan Wishart’s excellent cross found Doidge whose header was good but it was denied by an even better save by Stech.

Then, with just under an hour played, Jack Stacey was given his marching orders for a dangerously high boot on Wishart.

However, after 68 minutes, Luton doubled their advantage as Hylton capitalised on an FGR mistake at the back and rounded Collins before sliding the ball into the empty net.

Simpson was then on hand to deny Luton a third as his perfectly timed challenge prevented Harry Cornick from getting his shot away inside the area.
