Match Report: FGR suffer dissapointing final-day defeat

Doidge faces up against McKeown

JJ Hooper's second-half hat-trick was enough to leave FGR frustrated on final day as they fell to a 3-0 defeat at The New Lawn

Hooper bundled the ball in after 51 minutes to open the scoring before adding two stylish goals in the final ten minutes to claim his hat-trick and a Grimsby victory.

Mark Cooper made three changes to the side that lost at promoted Luton Town last week as he brought back Reuben Reid and Charlie Cooper while Brad Collins also made his return from concussion.

The Rovers boss also called Tom Anderson to the bench, the youngster making his first appearance in the first team squad this season.

With the sun beating down on The New Lawn neither side were able to create a clear chance inside the opening quarter of an hour, Grimsby going the closest with Mitch Rose’s blocked effort from a tight angle hitting the side netting.

Forest Green were clearly the more dominant of the two sides as the game progressed towards the 20th minute and Cooper almost provided Christian Doidge with a chance but the striker couldn’t direct the cross on target from the edge of the area with his head.

Doidge had another opportunity to open the scoring after 32 minutes, this time from a corner, but he couldn’t direct his back-post header on target under a challenge of his marker.

Doidge’s best chance of the half came with 37 minutes on the clock as Reid won the ball back from the Grimsby back line before sliding Doidge through on goal but the leading marksman couldn’t get the ball out from under his feet and James McKeown was able to slide at his feet and gather the ball.

Forest Green went inches from opening the scoring with five minutes to go until the break as the fall fell kindly to Cooper in the area but his effort took a deflection and trickled inches wide.

Just two minutes later, Rovers had yet another chance to burst the banks of the Grimsby defence. This time it was Scott Laird who tried his luck from a free-kick but McKeown was able to palm over as The Mariners were let off the hook again.

Although FGR started the second half in the same vein as they finished the first, it was the visitors that opened the scoring after 52 minutes. Andrew Fox delivered a free-kick to the back post and as the ball somehow dropped to Hooper, the striker battled well to force the ball into the bottom corner.

Rovers began to search for an equaliser and almost immediately found one through Doidge after 58 minutes as he tried to direct Lee Collins’cross goalwards but couldn’t get the better of McKeown from close range.

With 79 minutes on the clock Doidge went close once again as this time, as the ball finally dropped for him on the edge of the area, he prodded an effort towards goal but couldn’t get his effort through the crowd of bodies in the area.

The Mariners added a second with eight minutes to play as Hooper picked up the ball on the left and curled an effort across goal and into the far top corner.

The result was then capped off for the visitors with the game heading into added time as Hooper completed his hat-trick in exceptional style, picking the ball up 25 yards from goal and firing into the top right-hand corner past a rooted Brad Collins.
