Honours even in incredible FA Cup clash

Doidge celebrates his added time goal

Late drama ensured both sides will be in the hat next Monday following an unbelievable afternoon at The New Lawn.

Christain Doidge netted his eighth and ninth goals in six appearances for Rovers and Scott Laird also scored but their goals were cancelled out by Jordan Moore-Taylor and a Jayden Stockley brace in a thrilling draw at The New Lawn.

A threadbare Rovers side saw manager Mark Cooper make four changes to the side that drew with Cheltenham Town a week prior.

Keanu Marsh-Brown, Isaiah Osbourne and Drissa Traore were ruled out with knocks, while Jack Fitzwater hadn’t recovered from his concussion and Manny Monthe was serving the second game of his suspension meaning Mark Roberts, Luke James, Omar Bugiel and Dan Wishart all started.

Exeter began the brighter of the two sides on a cold and dreary afternoon in Nailsworth and had the chance to take the lead inside five minutes when a corner came in low from the right but Roberts was alert enough to turn the ball behind facing his own net.

Scott Laird, playing in the unusual role of one of the two holding midfielders alongside Lee Collins, then forced a good save from Pym as the ball dropped to him on the edge of the box and he was invited to shoot.

Reece Brown picked the ball up by the half way line a few minutes later and threaded a delightful ball in behind the Exeter defence which Doidge latched onto without breaking stride before slotting the ball between the legs of Pym.

Laird, who was enjoying himself in his new position, then had to be alert to deny a good chance for Exeter after McAlinden played through Jake Taylor, with the FGR man sliding into the box to put the ball behind for a corner.

Rovers continued to press early in the second half with Doidge and James both testing the reactions of Pym.

However, it was the visitors who pulled themselves back level just before the hour when the ball played into the box by Lloyd James and Moore-Taylor rose highest at the back post to head past Brad Collins.

Doidge looked to restore the hosts’ advantage just three minutes later when Bugiel played a nice ball in from the left but the big forward could only steer his header agonisingly wide of the target.

It was the visitors who took the lead for the first time in the 64th minute as Hiram Boateng drilled a cross into the area and Stockley was able to side foot his shot into the roof of the net.

Alex Iacovitti had to be alert late on after Reuben Reid, only just introduced by Paul Tisdale, was played in and despite his shot beating the on-rushing Brad Collins, the Rovers defender was back to clear off the line.

As Rovers searched desperately for an equaliser, an unbelievable sequence of events followed.

Laird stooped low to head home the equaliser, nodding in Doidge’s cross-cum-shot before Doidge scored his second of the afternoon as he latched onto James’ pass and tucked it past Pym, almost certainly securing the victory for the hosts.

It wasn’t to be however as with just one minute of added time to play, Stockley climbed highest to nod home a corner.
