FGR suffer first home defeat against Exeter

Despite a late goal from Shamir Mullings, Rovers couldn’t claw back the rest of a three goal deficit on a wet afternoon in Nailsworth.

Three minutes in, Exeter took the lead. A corner caused chaos in the Rovers box and after the defence failed to clear, Pierce Sweeney lashed home from three yards.

Liam Noble tried to create something for Rovers and he played in Doidge after eight minutes but the striker’s shot couldn’t beat the keeper from inside the box.

Exeter City then doubled their lead 17 minutes in as the ball was cut-back to Reuben Reid on the edge of the box and he slotted past Brad Collins.

Christian Doidge had the last chance of the half as he attempted an acrobatic effort from the edge of the box which flew over the bar.

Rovers started the second period with more gusto but 52 minutes in,against the run of play, Exeter bagged a third. Brad Collins produced an excellent save but as the ball came back into the area, Reuben Reid swept home his second of the game from 14 yards.

Christian Doidge was played through once more after 56 minutes but this time his effort rebounded off the post.

Doidge tried another acrobatic effort moments later but he couldn't make a firm connection.

Just after the hour mark, Will Randall made a powerful run down the right but he could only force a corner from his low cross.

The return of Omar Bugiel from international duty sparked Rovers into life as he forced a corner with one of his first touches.

And it was the lebanese forward who produced a fine pass 74 minutes in that led to Shamir Mullings slotting in his first league goal for FGR.

Scott Laird fired a wicked cross into the area after 80 minutes but Bugiel couldn’t quite connect before, at the other end Brad Collins produced a good save to deny Lloyd James with five minutes to play.
