Match Report: Impressive Rovers win in Nailsworth

Doidge celebrates his first-half strike

Two first half goals and a dominant display proved enough to see off an in-form Crawley Town.

Two first half goals from Reuben Reid and Christian Doidge proved the difference as Forest Green closed the gap on the sides above them with an impressive performance over 4th placed Crawley Town.

Mark Cooper made one change to the side that drew 1-1 away at Morecambe as Alex Bray came in to replace Dan Wishart, who droppedto the bench alongside Lee Collins, returning from illness.

Both sides came into the game on the back of a good run of form but it was Rovers who looked to be creating more chances inside the opening 10 minutes.

Doidge almost caught the visitors off guard after two minutes as he anticipated Gavin Gunning’s long ball but the striker was adjudged to have handled the ball on the edge of the area and the referee ended the chance.

Doidge had another chance minutes later as he picked up the ball 30 yards from goal but his effort flew over.

After 11 minutes, Forest Green took the lead. Isaiah Osbourne picked the ball up, his pass finding Dale Bennett down the right-hand side who dinked a ball into the area and Reid jumped at the near post to flick the ball home.

The hosts continued to push for goals and after a quarter of an hour, Doidge almost found it as he picked up Reid’s dinked ball in the box and hammered a powerful strike against the top of the post.

Despite Forest Green’s dominance, the visitors almost found a way back into the game after 19 minutes as Jimmy Smith raced through into the box but Brad Collins stood up well and blocked the midfielder’s shot.

Both sides looked like they could find the net and just five minutes later, Forest Green did exactly that. The ever-dangerous Dayle Grubb drove down the left and his cross found Doidge in the box and the in-form striker prodded his 21st goal of the season into the bottom corner.

Forest Green continued to look dangerous on the break and they almost created a few more chances before the end of half but the perfect final ball eluded them on each occasion.

Grubb had FGR’s best chance in the second-half’s opening 15 minutes as he curled a stunning effort towards the far top corner but the midfielder was incredibly unlucky to see his effort bounce back off the post.

Rovers hit the post again just after the hour mark as Reid tried to nod Grubb’s cross into the bottom corner but as the ball bounced back off the post the big striker looked certain to score but his second effort was spectacularly blocked to deny him his second of the game.

The remainder of the second half flew by and FGR produced another dominant display to claim a fifth home win win on the trot.
