Rovers suffer heavy defeat at Colchester

Liam Noble scored a good first half goal but strikes from Reid, Kent, Szmodics, Vincent-Young and Senior sealed a disappointing day for FGR in only their second away game in the Football League.

Colchester were first out of the blocks as Drey Wright made an interception before breaking down the right of midfield. His low cross somehow found its way to the far post where left back Kyle Reid was rushing in to tap home after just four minutes.

Defender Frankie Kent ventured forward for a Colchester corner fifteen minutes later and his header from a deep corner looped over a helpless Brad Collins to make it 2-0.

Forest Green responded instantly as the ball broke to Liam Noble on the edge of the box and the skipper only had one thing on his mind as he swept a low shot into the bottom corner via the post. 2-1 after just 22 minutes.

It could have been three for Colchester after 32 minutes but for debutant Mark Roberts, who made a crucial block following a set-piece.

Brad Collins produced a fine save just before half time, diving to his left to deny Kyle Reid.

Roberts almost found the net for FGR from a corner after 52 minutes but he couldn't quite connect with his header at the back post.

Colchester continued to knock on the Rovers door and shortly after the hour mark they got their third. Tariq Issa drilled a ball into the FGR box and Sammie Szmodics applied the finish despite the best efforts of Scott Laird.

Doidge couldn't quite tuck home FGR's only chance of the half from Scott Laird's low delivery as Rovers looked to claw themselves back into the game.Kane Vincent-Young then added Colchester's fourth on 74 minutes as he drove from right back, through the heart of the FGR midfield before prodding home from just inside the box.Deep into added time, Courtney Senior added Colchester's fifth from a yard out after Forest Green were caught on the break.
