Match Report: Bennett header sinks Rovers

Isaiah Osbourne

Richie Bennett's 28th minute header proved to be the difference in a cagey game at The New Lawn.

Richie Bennett opened the scoring for Carlisle after less than half an hour and his goal proved enough to see off Forest Green who remain bottom of the table.

Mark Cooper made three changes to the side that lost to Luton a week ago. Iasiah Osbourne, Dale Bennett and Drissa Traore all made their return to the side in place of youngsters Jordan Stevens and Jordan Simpson while Reece Brown was unavailable due to injury.

Neither side were able to get hold of the ball in the opening exchanges, Christian Doidge’s deflected shot after 16 minutes being the only real chance.

Osbourne also went close four minutes later as he skilfully beat his man before firing narrowly wide of the far post.

Despite FGR’s two half-chances, it was the visitors who started to grow into the game, striking the bar after 22 minutes as Hallam Hope found himself with space in the area.

The visitors continued to press and after 28 minutes their dominant period paid off. Drissa Traore gave away a free-kick on the Carlisle left and as the resulting set-piece curled into the area, Richie Bennett climbed highest to head home.

Richie Bennett then could have found the net again a few minutes later as Brad Collins gifted him the ball 30 yards from goal but the strikers lob floated inches wide.

Jack Fitzwater was then called into action as he flung himself across the goal-mouth to produce an incredible block, denying Bennett from inside the area.

Carlisle continued to dominate the early stages of the second half but Fitzwater remained solid at the back for FGR successfully stopping Bennett from getting a shot away on two occasions.

Shaun Miller then found himself with space inside the Rovers' box with 14 minutes to play but he couldn't get his shot through the crowd of defenders that through themselves in the way.

Tom Parkes then fired a vicious effort across the face of goal with five minutes to plaay but he couldn't sneak his effort inside the post.

Laird's ball in from the left caused panic at the back for Carlisle after 90 minutes, but Jack Bonham's flapped clearance allowed the visitors to clear their lines.
