Match Report: FGR fall at the hands of Carlisle

Dayle Grubb in action

Jamie Devitt's first half strike enough to see off FGR

The weather played a significant role in a disappointing defeat for FGR as they went down by the same 1-0 deficit as the home fixture. Devitt this time getting the goal as, just like the previous encounter, United held on after taking a 28th-minute lead.

Mark Cooper made just one change to the side that ran out 5-2 victors against Cambridge at The New Lawn a week ago as he brought Farrend Rawson back into the side to replace Dan Wishart - Haydn Hollis moving to left back in a back four.

With the wind swirling overhead, it was always going to be a tough first half for Brad Collins and his back line, but despite some early warning signs, the young keeper was performing very well, the hosts being limited to a few long through balls into the box.

Dayle Grubb once again seemed in good form, picking up where he left off last weekend, dominating the midfield during the opening exchanges.

Neither side were able to muster a shot on goal until the 28th minute when, after a quick free-kick was played out to the left, the hosts were able to deliver a cross and although the first header didn’t cause the FGR backline any trouble, the ball dropped to the feet of Devitt inside the area, his powerful effort staying true and leaving Collins stranded.

Forest Green almost found a way back into the game after 36 minutes. Christian Doidge couldn’t latch onto Grubb’s ball into the box but defender Tom Parkes could only watch on as his touch almost ended up in his own net but he was fortunate enough to see it bounce wide.

With only a few minutes left in the first half, the wind almost helped Carlisle double their lead as a corner from the left-hand side curled viciously towards Collins’ goal but the FGR stopper was able to push the ball clear.

Forest Green, now with the wind at their backs, looked to create an opening to get back in the game and with 57 minutes on the clock, Doidge thought he had found one. Parkes seemed to misjudge a through ball and as the in-form striker raced through he appeared to be brought down but in a similar vein to his penalty appeals three weeks ago against Swindon, with Tom Neild, who also took charge of Forest Green's away game against Crawley, waved play on.

Carlisle almost doubled their lead in a rare second half opening, Luke Joyce finding himself with acres of space at the back post and although his effort beat Collins, it didn’t beat Rawson who had tracked back to produce a heroic block on the line.

FGR went close after 75 minutes as Grubb’s corner almost found Hollis in the six-yard box but the big defender couldn’t quite rise high enough to meet the in-swinging ball.

Substitute Dan Wishart provided the next chance as he whipped in a powerful free-kick with eight minutes to play but nobody was able to connect with his cross at the back post.

Doidge could have found a late goal with FGR’s final chance of the game as the clocked ticked into added time but his flicked header from Collins’ long ball was comfortably saved by Jack Bonham.
