Match Report: FGR thrash Cambridge at The New Lawn.

Five goals proved more than enough for FGR to brush Cambridge aside at The New Lawn.

Dayle Grubb and Christian Doidge both bagged braces while Tahvon Campbell also scored as FGR emerged dominant 5-2 victors over mid-table Cambridge.

Mark Cooper made two changes to the side the lost at Swindon last week as Dale Bennett returned to the side to replace the injured Farrend Rawson and Reece Brown also returned in place of Manny Monthe.

Having emerged victorious when the sides met last September, it didn’t take long for Cambridge to take the lead this time. After just three minutes, Uche Ikpeazu picked the ball up and drove down the left before turning inside and, after pausing momentarily, he played a square pass into the on-rushing Maris who couldn’t miss from inside the six-yard box.

Despite the early goal, neither side were able to get a foot-hold in the game, Dan Wishart’s cross and Jevani Brown’s shot at the other end were the only other chances of the opening quarter of an hour.

With 17 goals to his name so far this season, it is always difficult to keep Doidge away from the score sheet and, with 18 minutes played, he found the net again. Wishart’s ball in from the left would have found Reuben Reid but the striker cleverly let it run allowing Doidge to slip in behind and slide the ball across goal into the bottom corner.

The game remained fairly level for the next five minutes or so but neither side were able to register another shot on goal. However, with 25 minutes played, Elito was able to latch onto a ball down the left-hand side before firing underneath Brad Collins at the near post.

During the following 15 minutes, FGR hit the woodwork twice. Wishart was first and having run half the length of the pitch the defender decided to take the shot on himself, lashing a powerful effort towards the near top corner, but he was unlucky to see his effort hit the post and the crossbar. On just his second league start after joining from Weston-super-Mare, Grubb almost scored his first league goal, cutting onto his weaker left foot and smashing a shot onto the underside of the bar.

Just two minutes later, however, Grubb did find the net. Dale Bennett found Doidge down the right-hand side and Doidge this time became the provider as he cut the ball back to the edge of the area allowing Grubb to sweep home.

In the first minute of the second half, Forest Green had a strong case for a penalty as Wishart was brought down in the box but the referee waved play-on and as Grubb picked the ball up on the edge of the box, his strike flying just over.

Grubb’s impressive performance continued and after 74 minutes, with the scores still level, he gave the hosts the lead in impressive style. Wishart found Grubb on the left and the midfielder drove inside and smashed home into the near top corner.

With 11 minutes remaining Grubb almost snatched his hat-trick but his left-footed shot from 25 yards flew narrowly wide of David Forde’s post.

Even though they had the lead, Forest Green didn’t stop there as Doidge increased their advantage with eight minutes to play, capitalising on a mistake from Forde as he picked up the keeper’s loose ball before slotting home from inside the box.

With five minutes to play, pacey striker Campbell stepped onto the pitch to make his first appearance having signed just 24 hours prior and as the game ticked into stoppage time he added FGR’s fifth, slotting home from the edge of the area.
