FGR suffer narrow defeat to high flying Accrington

Forest Green will consider themselves unlucky as they couldn't breakthrough a resolute Accrington defence as they fell to a narrow 1-0 loss.

Mark Cooper made two changes from the side that lost at Cambridge. Manny Monthe, who was set to start due to Alex Iacovitti’s injury, was unable to play due to a fractured cheekbone which he suffered in training. Reece Brown stepped in to midfield and Charlie Cooper came back in in place of Will Randall.

Omar Bugiel had FGR’s first chance of the game as Reece Brown slid him through after just three minutes but he couldn’t get a shot away due to a terrific tackle from JordanThorniley.

Christian Doidge was next in line to attempt to make the breakthrough as he connected with Bennett’s ball in, his header flying over the bar.

Sean McConville’s cross almost created a chance at the other end and Jonny Edwards let fly from range. Neither chance coming to anything.

FGR were pressing the Stanley defence and after a number of half chances, Dan Wishart fired across goal but he was unlucky to see his shot role wide of the far post.

Rovers continued to knock on the door and Dan Wishart’s cross almost found Doidge, but Aaron Chapman was able to hold on to the ball.

FGR started the second half brightly and were playing some good football around the box. Doidge, Omar and Wishart all had half chances within seconds of each other in one of Rovers’ best performances of the season.

But it would be Accrington who broke the deadlock completely against the run of play as Sean Conneely’s strike from outside the box bounced in off the post.

Charlie Cooper attempted the spectacular after 76 minutes, but his bicycle kick fell wide before Christian Doidge dragged a shot across the face of goal.

With Jordan Stevens stepping off the bench, FGR looked to grab an equaliser. Drissa Traore’s thunderous effort almost did just that but it bounced off the crossbar.
