Bugiel double helps Rovers clinch third

York City Away

Omar Bugiel’s brace helped Forest Green secure a final finish of third in the National League with a last day draw at York, writes Richard Joyce.

Rovers will now prepare to face play-off semi-final opponents Dagenham & Redbridge firstly away before hosting the fourth placed finishers at The New Lawn next Sunday.

In front of the BT Sport cameras, Bugiel’s double helped FGR lead twice against a York side who couldn’t secure the result needed to stay in the division, after Guiseley’s late goal elsewhere in Yorkshire, proved enough to keep them up.

The former Football League side, who have now suffered back-to-back relegations, looked like they were going to hang onto their National League status by a thread, courtesy of two strikes from the outstanding former FGR hero Jon Parkin which didn’t prove to be enough.

Bootham Crescent was a cauldron of noise before kick-off. And a dramatic opening few minutes saw the hosts twice hit the bar. Left sider Sam Muggleton’s incredible long distance throw ins caused chaos as in quick succession he hit the woodwork on two occasions, both after Parkin had tested Sam Russell with a well-taken volley early on.

Bugiel popped up though after just six minutes to open the scoring. He took advantage of a Rovers counter-attack and finished confidently after Dan Wishart’s fine run down the left.

York should have levelled on the quarter of an hour mark only to see Vadaine Oliver blast over when he attempted to latch onto Parkin’s driven ball across the face of goal.

The hosts finally drew level in a breathless first half, and it was their true leader from the front, Parkin, who like he did so many times in two years at Forest Green, struck the equaliser.

York took advantage of FGR’s loss of possession in their own half, and Parkin was on hand to calmly tuck in past the on rushing Russell.

Their joy was short-lived however. Immediately FGR broke down the other end and Fabien Robert fed Bugiel and the German striker did the rest, restoring Rovers lead.

Russell denied Muggleton’s curler down the other end before half time, while Bugiel saw a shot saved by Scott Loach as FGR attacked with Shamir Mullings the supplier.

With results not going their way an onslaught came the way of the Forest Green goal early in the second 45 minutes. Russell was in inspired form however and he produced an unbelievable save to push away Asa Hall’s drive from the edge of the area.

He was picking the ball out of his own net two minutes later though. That man again, Parkin, got his side back on level terms for a second time as he poked home from close range to give his side hope.

The powerful forward then almost sealed his hat-trick with a long range free kick that flew just wide, and another sensational Russell stop denied York, when Hall’s header was this time kept out by the stoppers strong trailing leg.

Oliver’s sprint clear ended with a wasteful finish, as news elsewhere suggested that with Guiseley behind, a draw would be enough for York to secure safety by goal difference.

The home side pushed on but struggled to create any more major openings. Simon Heslop fired over and a Parkin effort was blocked convincingly.

Teenage striker Olly Mehew came on as a substitute to make his Forest Green debut towards the finish, and as updates came through that Guiseley had bagged a late equaliser in their home tie with Solihull, York began to launch the ball forward in the desperate need for a goal.

Two late corners saw keeper Loach come up from the back in an attempt to be the late hero. But it all proved too much for York, who were to be relegated by just a point, leaving FGR with the security of third place heading into two massive tests up next with the Daggers.
