Doidge strikes late to earn Solihull win
In the depths of stoppage time Christian Doidge notched his 22nd goal of the season to help Forest Green to three points over Solihull Moors, writes Richard Joyce.
With just seconds left on the clock Rovers leading marksman struck to help his side back to the top of the National League, after Fabien Robert's first half finish had broken the deadlock at The New Lawn.
Oladapo Afolayan had looked like he had earned a spirited Moors side a point with his goal after half time.
However attacking persistence would tell for Mark Cooper's men who were rewarded at the death with a winner.
The night had started well for Forest Green with Solihull's on loan Chelsea goalkeeper Nathan Baxter saving well from an early effort.
Meanwhile the 18-year-old keeper also kept out a Mark Ellis header on seven minutes after Sam Wedgbury had teed up his fellow defender.
Dan Wishart would smash wide minutes later, as Solihull's influence on the game grew throughout the half, and both Ashley Sammons and Afolayan saw efforts go close.
Excellent build up play would lead to the night's opener five minutes before half time as Robert found the net.
He picked up on Wishart's outstanding through ball and kept his cool to roll the ball past Baxter.
Frenchman Robert almost doubled the tally shortly after, but his stinging drive was this time kept out by Baxter, with another strong hit also saved.
After half time the lively visitors attack would cause FGR problems. Afolayan went close and substitute Nortei Nortey also had an attempt on goal, but they would eventually find a way past Sam Russell.
A direct ball over the top wasn't dealt with and Afolayan coolly slotted to level for the visitors on their first ever visit to The New Lawn.
The game was there to be won for both sides from that point onwards. Charlie Cooper tried to restore FGR's advantage with a long distance strike that whistled just over, and down the other end the hard working Afolayan's shot skimmed the post.
With quarter of an hour to go Forest Green would see a major chance go begging as Kaiyne Woolery came off the bench to hit the bar.
He headed onto the woodwork after meeting Robert's fantastic cross after the former Lorient man had seized upon Liam Noble's excellent forward pass.
The away side too would miss a big opening when Afolayan couldn't convert with a chance inside the FGR six-yard box on 81 minutes.
Loan duo Woolery and Jake Gosling tried to find the goal the home crowd were desperate for with late chances, but as is so often the case with this Forest Green side they battled to the end to claim all three points.
Ellis' clever chipped ball into the area found Doidge who swivelled and finished perfectly to record a significant win.
