Second half strikes help FGR to Chester win
Christian Doidge and Liam Noble helped Forest Green claim a third victory, and a third clean sheet in as many games, as they beat Chester at The New Lawn, writes Richard Joyce.
In control throughout, Rovers brushed Chester aside for the third time this season, and made it nine straight wins in all nine of the two clubs clashes with one another.
The victory also confirmed Mark Cooper’s sides place in the National League play-offs for a third consecutive season.
Rovers started in spectacular style as Doidge struck the upright in the opening minute, while Omar Bugiel’s header from an excellent Charlie Cooper corner was hacked off the line when it looked close to going in.
FGR’s lively start continued when Doidge turned and shot wide, Kaiyne Woolery saw his strike tipped over and another shot cannoned off the bar as Bugiel saw his hit take a deflection on its way through.
A dominant first half saw Manny Monthe advance forward to try his luck, and Dan Wishart’s mazy run almost saw him find the net.
Chester would have been relieved to go into half time with both sides still level, although they were behind five minutes into the second half, when the deadly Doidge struck.
He latched onto a terrific Bugiel through ball and slotted confidently past the on rushing Lynch to gift his side the lead.
Chester’s Welsh stopper had to be at his best to keep out a deflected cross minutes later and Woolery fired wide following good build up play.
Wigan Athletic loanee Woolery was a thorn in the visitor’s side. He very nearly added to Doidge’s goal midway through the second half when he burst through on the left and slammed against the post with his left foot.
Chester were offering little threat, however Rovers still pushed on in search of a comforting second, and it would eventually come when Noble’s return from injury from off the bench saw him put FGR in the driving seat.
It was a wonderful finish from the midfielder who stroked in from distance for his ninth goal of the season.
Noble then laid off Doidge who looked to make it 3-0 with a great threaded pass but Lynch was quick off his line to make a fine block.
After his stand out performance in midweek at Tranmere, Sam Russell enjoyed a quiet afternoon, although he did have to watch Elliott Durrell’s rare attempt go just over his bar, and watch youngster Matty Waters’ strike get charged down, as Chester chased a late consolation that wouldn’t come as FGR capped another terrific performance with a third consecutive clean sheet.
