International clash comes to The New Lawn
Forest Green Rovers under 18s get to test themselves against international opposition when they take on the Australian Schools Team at The New Lawn this Thursday evening.
The FGR youth side have a chance to claim the scalp of an Australian team that are so far unbeaten after seven games of their nine-match tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Their record is five wins and two draws, including a 3-1 win over Welsh Schools, a 1-1 draw with Northern Ireland Schools, and 3-2 win against Republic of Ireland Schools and a 0-0 draw against England Schools Team in Wolverhampton on Sunday. They face British Colleges tomorrow before facing Forest Green on Thursday.
If history is any guide this 16-man Australian squad may contain senior Internationals of the future, with several Socceroo stars of the past making their first European foray on this bi-annual tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland, including former Palma and Palermo star Marc Bresciano, ex-Borussia Dormund and QPR player Ned Zelic, and former Wolverhampton midfielder Steve Corica.
Surprisingly Australian cricketing legend Steve Waugh also represented Australian Schoolboys before switching sports.
Entry to the game is £3 and £2 for concessions and The Green Man pub will be open from 7pm, with the match kicking-off at 7.30pm.
