Forbes and Thomson sink roots at Forest Green
Keiron Forbes and Jake Thomson have given Forest Green Rovers manager Dave Hockaday a double Christmas present – after both agreed to extend their stays at The New Lawn.
Forbes has signed a one-year contract extension to stay at FGR until the end of the 2012/13 season, while Thomson will pen a permanent deal during the January transfer window.
The double-signing is the first of what manager David Hockaday hopes will be a stream of players wanting to commit themselves to FGR in the coming weeks.
Forbes has anchored the FGR midfield with aplomb this season and been a vital cog in shifting Rovers towards the more passing oriented game favoured by Hockaday.
The 21-year-old has picked up three man-of-the-match awards in league games and was the stand-out player during September when results were not going Rovers way.
Hockaday said: “Kieron Forbes has signed a contract extension until the end of next season. This is big, positive news for the club.”
Only Rovers’ two marauding full backs, Jared Hodgkiss and Chris Stokes, have started more games than Forbes this season.
In more positive news, Trinidad and Tobago international Jake Thomson has committed himself to Forest Green until at least the end of the current season.
The 22-year-old arrived on loan from Kettering Town in late September and after finding his feet within Rovers structure, has been an ever-present and one of Rovers best over the past month – including a man-of-the-match effort against Darlington and an impressive goal-scoring display against Tamworth.
Hockaday said: “Jake’s agreed to sign until at least the end of this season and he is keen to commit himself to Forest Green Rovers beyond this."
Thomson learned his trade at Southampton FC under the tutelage of Hockaday and has shown his versatility in recent weeks, being shifted from the wing to central midfield and even played at centre-back for more than half of Saturday's 2-0 defeat by Lincoln City following Jamie Turley’s red-card.
In a further move to increase FGR’s depth, two youth team players have signed non-contract terms to join the senior squad.
Midfielders Adrian Harvey, 18, from Bristol and Ashley Brown, 17, from Newent – have been issued Squad Numbers 25 and 26 respectively.
Hockaday said: “This is massive news from the Youth angle, as we want to be a club that will give our young players a chance of first team football.
“They are two of the best prospects at the club and with continued hard work I am sure there will be more (youth players) that will come through.”
